African Library Project

Currently Collecting for Juneau's 11th Library

Join Hearthside Books and the Downtown Rotary Club of Juneau in a book drive to build a community library in Africa!

We are continually seeking donations of gently read or new children's books, with the aim of sending a library of 1,000 books to Africa every spring.

Since 2009 we have sent over 10,000 books from Juneau!

Books needed include:  baby board books, softcover children's picture books and easy readers, softcover juvenile chapter books, softcover dictionaries, K-8 textbooks (English, math, geography & science).

Unfortunately, we cannot accept: books with lots of slang, adult paperback romance novels, books about American or religious holidays, and books that evangelize or promote a particular religion.

If you are unable to donate books, we are also accepting monetary donations to help cover the costs of shipping the books from Juneau to the clearinghouse in New Orleans (approx. $300 per library).  Monetary donations may be made to the orange ALP donation can on the counter at either store.

A special thank you to the Downtown Rotary Club of Juneau, who has graciously agreed to fund the shipping costs from New Orleans to Africa.

Please bring book donations to either Hearthside Location:  Downtown on the Corner of Front & Franklin 586-1726 and in the Nugget Mall 789-2750.
